Cox Green School

Client:  Cox Green School, secondary school with academy status with 1000+ students

Brief:  As part of a £4.7 million expansion programme, we were tasked with creating a new design-led school dining hall for Cox Green School, housed within a new building.

Challenges: One of the key design challenges of this project was ensuring there was adequate space for queuing at the tills without compromising on seating capacity.  Our design also had to work with the school’s existing table and bench sets, which we were required to match, as well as specifying additional coordinating tables and chairs to provide flexibility and introduce an element of colour to the new dining facility, called ‘Dine@CoxGreen’.

Solution: For maximum flexibility and efficient storage we chose robust tilt top tables with lockable castors, allowing the tables to be moved easily and quickly. The tilting table tops allow them to nest together for storage in a small space, providing a clear floor for efficient cleaning.

We introduced colour into the dining hall by specifying chairs and bar stools in translucent orange and red, which complemented the existing white and plywood table and bench sets giving the space a bright, modern feel.

Impact:  Our design for ‘Dine@CoxGreen’ allowed the school to use their existing dining hall furniture together with carefully selected new pieces to create a bright, flexible and cost-effective new dining facility where students can unwind and eat their lunch in a café style venue, a far cry from the standard functional school dining hall. The school appreciated our creativity, speed and efficiency in working with them every step of the way to a deliver new dining venue that will last for many years.

Stella could not have been more helpful throughout the design and installation process….she understood my vision and put this into practice. The impact of the new area has been significant and there has been an increase in students and staff using the facility.

Our 6th formers use the area as a study area as it is bright, light and airy and the furniture is modern and flexible for their needs.

I would use Four Square Furniture again in the future and would recommend them.
